Day 270: archiargumentation

by Cláudio Vilarinho

Some years ago (maybe 3), architect Luis Moreno Mansilla (Mansilla y Tunón arquitectos), held a lecture in Oporto (FAUP). One of the contents of his talk had to do with the work of MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Castilla y León, Spain.

During the lecture, he said that after questioning the Mayor of León, about his opinion on the building (project at the time), he was amazed, however there was a small drawback, the absence of colour in the building, the project show(ed) an abstraction/strong neutrality. The (Mr.) President had been clear. During a (large) amount of time, nothing, the idea of including colour in the design didn’t arise. One day, when they saw a postcard (if I’m not mistaken) of Leon’s Cathedral El Halconero, they decided to “use” the colours of the windows to colour (without quotation marks) the facade of part of the building. They told the story (idea) to the Mr. Mayor and he was even more amazed.

The idea of an architectural project, associated to an argument, can arise where last expected. Many times adjectives can be in two forms: weak or strong. What for us architects can be a very strong idea for someone that is not sensitive to the discipline, it can mean zero..

Our idea for the proposal of the competition that we will submit in more or less two weeks, seems strong to us, but…
